Washington, D.C. – Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old arrested for the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University (UVU) on September 10, was described by those who knew him as a shy, reserved gamer from a staunchly MAGA-supporting family, with conflicting accounts of his political leanings.
An electrician coworker, speaking anonymously to CNN due to the case’s sensitivity, called Robinson quiet and apolitical unless prompted, noting he “wasn’t too fond of Trump or Charlie (Kirk).” However, a high school classmate recalled Robinson as a “diehard Trump” supporter in 2020, aligning with his Republican family, leaving friends baffled by his apparent shift.
Robinson, a nonpartisan voter who never cast a ballot, was turned in by his father, Matt, after confessing to the killing, ending a 33-hour manhunt on September 11. As Robinson remains silent to investigators, questions linger about his motives in the high-profile political assassination.
Conflicting Portraits of Robinson
Robinson, from Washington, Utah, was arrested around 10:00 p.m. MT on September 11 after his father, Matt, 48, a registered Republican and Trump supporter, alerted authorities via a family friend (a clergy member) following Tyler’s confession, per Utah Gov. Spencer Cox.
The electrician, who worked with Robinson weeks ago, told CNN, “He wasn’t talkative unless he was spoken to… didn’t really talk political unless someone brought it up,” adding that Robinson expressed dislike for Trump and Kirk.
However, a former high school classmate said, “When I knew him and his family, they were like diehard Trump,” recalling Robinson’s conservative stance in 2020 at Desert Hills High School in St. George, Utah. “When this happened, I was like… I don’t know what changed,” the classmate added.
The classmate described Robinson as “very, very big into gaming,” interested in video game design, and spending lunches playing card games like Yu-Gi-Oh with friends. “He was quiet all the time, a little goofy… fun to be around, fun to talk to. He just was kind of shy and didn’t open up very often,” with no memory of concerning behavior or trouble.
Washington County Clerk Ryan Sullivan confirmed Robinson is registered as unaffiliated but never voted, per a September 12 statement. Robinson’s grandmother, Debbie, 69, said, “He has never, ever spoke politics to me at all… has never, ever gotten in trouble in his life,” expressing confusion.

Kirk, 31, was fatally shot in the neck at 12:20 p.m. MDT on September 10 during a TPUSA event at UVU’s Sorensen Student Center. The FBI released photos on September 11 of a suspect in a black T-shirt, Converse shoes, and baseball cap, later identified as Robinson, offering a $100,000 reward.
After a 33-hour manhunt involving FBI, Orem PD, and UVU Police, Robinson’s father recognized him in the photos and arranged his surrender through the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, which notified Utah County, per Commissioner Beau Mason.
Mason told CNN, “I’m confident that the process we were using, the leads we were developing and the information that was coming in—we would have apprehended him.”
Robinson’s roommate provided Discord messages detailing bullet engravings and a hidden rifle, not planned on the platform, per Discord’s Jud Hoffman. Robinson faces aggravated murder, felony discharge, and obstruction charges, with a June 2026 trial.

What People Are Saying
President Trump, in a September 11 White House statement, said, “We have to beat the hell out of radical left lunatics,” later urging non-violence, citing Kirk’s advocacy. His September 10 address blamed “radical left” rhetoric for “terrorism,” awarding Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously.
Far-right figures like Steve Bannon called Kirk a “casualty of war,” while Elon Musk tweeted to “fight or die.” However, former Presidents Biden, Obama, and Bush condemned violence.
Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, vowed on September 12 to continue TPUSA’s mission, calling the killers “evildoers” in a video with 3 million views so far. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) warned universities to fire professors celebrating Kirk’s death or lose federal funding.

Robinson’s silence leaves motive unclear; his trial could explore radicalization from a MAGA family. Kirk’s martyrdom may fuel GOP mobilization, while debates on campus speech and gun laws intensify.
