Fire chief saves two homes from Eaton fire using milk and beer

Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy became an unexpected hero during the devastating Eaton Fire in Altadena, using milk and beer to save two homes amid a fiery catastrophe.

The fire chief, who grew up in Altadena, had initially reassured his family and friends in the area that their homes were safe when the fire first sparked in Eaton Canyon. However, hours later, the fire surged unexpectedly, engulfing much of the neighborhood.

Fennessy was unable to contact his brother, whose phone had stopped working. Fearing the worst, he rushed to the scene only to find out his brother and family had safely evacuated. Still, Fennessy decided to check on his brother’s house.

What he encountered was harrowing. The streets he once knew were unrecognizable, with miles of massive destruction. Yet, miraculously, his brother’s and a neighbor’s homes were still standing amidst the flames consuming the rest of the area.

With no fire engines in sight and no one to call for help, Fennessy took matters into his own hands. Noticing that the gas meter on the neighbor’s house was melting dangerously, he searched for a way to cool it down. He located a hose but found no water supply. Desperate, he entered the house and checked the refrigerator, finding only milk and a few beers.

Using these unconventional tools, Fennessy ran back outside and poured the liquids over the gas meter to cool it down. While the flames weren’t completely extinguished, his quick thinking and actions were enough to prevent the fire from rekindling. The two homes remained the only ones standing on the block.

Fennessy described the experience as unlike anything he had seen in nearly five decades of firefighting. He noted that such urban conflagrations, where fires jump from house to house, are becoming more common in Southern California.

Despite receiving widespread praise for his actions, Fennessy attributed much of the outcome to luck, saying he simply did what any trained firefighter would have done, regardless of whether it was for family or strangers.
